IPL TREATMENTS
The method behind IPL is Selective Photothermolysis.
This means that the light (photo) selects a target, heats it up (thermo) and destroys it (lysis). In this process, short pulses of light are used to treat skin conditions.
The light energy is converted to heat energy within a specific target to break down the structure. The wavelength recognises the chromophores (for example, melanin in hair) within the skin, the light energy is then absorbed by the target structure and a thermal effect is obtained. This method causes less damage to normal tissue than continuous beam lasers.
IPL treatment uses
- Hair removal
- Overall facial rejuvenation
- Diminishing redness in the face
- Reducing pigmentation
- Acne
- Visibly ageing or damaged skin
- Erasing broken capillaries
- Minimising pore size
HAIR REMOVAL
The light is selectively absorbed by the melanin, the pigment in the hair follicle. The light energy heats the pigment and effectively destroys the hair follicle, cauterising the blood supply, without damaging the surrounding cells.

SKIN REJUVENATION
The light causes the perception of trauma to the dermis and epidermis, which triggers the natural healing and regeneration processes. It gives the skin a blank canvas, a more even tone and appearance.
ACNE ROSACEA
Intense Pulsed Light has two actions to help Rosacea. Firstly red thread veins absorb the light energy, which makes them hot. This damage encourages the body to reabsorb them, which improves appearance. Secondly, the light energy warms the collagen fibres in the skin, which stimulates new collagen and collagen remodelling.
VEINS/VASCULAR TREATMENT
A thread vein is a small vessel near the surface of the skin. Blood contains haemoglobin that absorbs the light and converts into heat. This heat destroys the protein in the wall of the thread vein. As a result, the vein will gradually and safely disappear after treatment. The thicker the blood vessel, the more treatments required.

PIGMENTATION TREATMENT
Age spots/freckles will give patches of pigmentation that are darker to the ambient skin colour due to inconsistency in melanocytes. The light is absorbed into these patches and the melanocytes are caused to shatter. They dissipate and break up over a period of time.

How is IPL different to laser?
An IPL treatment consists of a series of high-intensity pulses of broad spectrum light, whereas laser delivers a direct beam of energy to one specific target.
IPL shares some similarities with laser treatments because they both use light to heat and destroy their targets, however, the main differences between laser and IPL lies in the technology that each use to generate the light.
The laser uses a single wavelength (colour) of light which typically matches only on chromophore, and so only one condition. On the other hand, IPL uses a broad spectrum that when used with filters, allows it to be used against several conditions.
A full consultation and patch test are necessary before any treatment can be undertaken.
You will also need to consider the following points:
- The skin test will ensure you are suitable for IPL treatments. We will then advise you on the best course of treatments to achieve your goal; the recommendation is a minimum of 6 usually.
- Recommended frequency of treatments is 4-6 weeks.
- Treatment is not possible if you have a tan, (natural, fake or from a sunbed).
- Treatment is not possible if you are pregnant.
- Treatment is not possible if you have suffered from any type of skin cancer in the last 10 years.
- Treatment is only suitable for light skin tones (Fitzpatrick Skin Types 1-3), and hair removal treatment is not effective on white or grey hairs.
- Following a patch test your course of treatment must be undertaken within at least 6 months or another patch test will be required. If any change in medical condition or medication occurs after the patch test has been performed we may need to re-test before proceeding with treatment.
- In order to qualify for the reduced prices of a course, the full course price must be paid before commencing treatment.
